Subject files, 1968-1971. Contains position papers, constituent correspondence, articles, and memoranda. These files reflect the concerns of Michigan's electorate on many issues of the day. Some of the issues were short lived, such as daylight-savings time, disposable bottles, dissident students, and the age of majority. Other issues lasted decades past these papers, such as busing, capital punishment, civil rights, gun control, pollution, and abortion.

Gary Byker was born on November 27, 1920 in Alvord, Iowa. He graduated from Calvin College with a major in history and did graduate work in public opinion and propaganda at Michigan States University. During World War II, Byker served four and a half years (two and a half years with the Thirty-fourth Infantry Division). He was wounded three times in combat in North Africa and Italy.
